How to Beat Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be a real roadblock during a job interview or date night. Don’t get caught with a malodorous mouth—try these tips to help beat bad breath.

1. Brush at Least Twice Daily

Brushing your teeth at least twice daily should be part of your oral hygiene routine. Not only will this help keep your mouth healthy, but it will also help to eliminate bad breath. Brush once in the morning and once in the evening prior to going to bed. If possible, it’s also a good idea to brush after your lunch.

2. Floss Regularly

Flossing is one of the best ways to remove plaque (buildup that harbors bacteria) from your mouth. Like brushing, flossing should also be part of your daily regimen. Not only does removal of food and plaque from between the teeth help to keep your breath fresh, but it also aids in preventing gum disease and tooth loss.

3. Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash is an oral rinse designed specifically to target the odor-causing compounds that result in bad breath. Additionally, it kills germs inside of the mouth. Measure the appropriate amount as dictated on the container, and swish inside your mouth between 30 seconds and one minute for the best results.

4. Try Tongue Scrapers

Tongue scrapers (also known as tongue cleaners or tongue brushes) help to eliminate bacterial build-up, food debris, fungi, and even dead cells—much of which is related to bad breath and common oral health problems. Many toothbrushes actually come equipped with a tongue scraper, too.

5. Chew Gum

Chewing gum is a quick and easy way to reduce bad breath. Not only do gum scents help cover the bad odor, but its stimulating saliva aids in rinsing out bacteria. Look for gums with cinnamon, peppermint, or spearmint ingredients, and choose gums that are sugar-free so as to prevent the chance of cavities from developing.

6. Say No to Smoking

Not only is smoking detrimental to your health, but also the tobacco leaves smoke particles in the throat and lungs, resulting in bad breath (also known as “smoker’s breath”). Say no to smoking—period. You’ll drastically reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and bad breath.

7. Drink More H2O

Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the mouth moist, aiding in washing away food particles and bacteria that result in bad breath. If you notice that you have recurring bad breath, or that you consistently have dry mouth, reach for a water bottle. This is an especially good alternative to other drinks that contain high amounts of sugar.
